This week A24 dropped the first official image for the Backrooms movie. In fact, the image was so vague, that only Backrooms fans would be able to spot the iconic chevron wallpaper design embedded in the image.
And while there certainly were lots of Backrooms fans on social media pointing out what movie this was for ― myself included ― there were many people thinking that it was promoting anything from other A24 movies (such as Marty Supreme) to non-A24 franchises (such as Aliens). Eventually, the image was reposted by Kane Parsons on his Instagram stories which was solid confirmation that it was indeed for the Backrooms movie.
The image itself wasn’t the usual Backrooms yellow, but instead was navy blue. It appeared to be a soundwave (much like one would see on a spectrogram) and the tagline posted with it was simply “Everything Must Go”.
Fan Theories
Fans of Kane’s work are used to the mysteries surrounding his work. Episodes of not just his Backrooms YouTube series, but also People Still Live Here and The Oldest View, are left with more questions after each episode. Kane occasionally embeds unrelated images in his stories which leave people wondering if they are anything relevant. And he posts images on Discord server which appear to be teasers for what he is working on, only to delete them shortly afterwards.
So it’s no surprise that some fans took to the internet to share what they thought. Here are a few of the theories we came across, including one of our own.
Our Theory: Bacteria’s Vision
It has long been known that the monster from the Backrooms series ― known as either “The Lifeform” or “Bacteria” cannot see and uses sound as it’s means to being able to sense it’s surroundings. We speculated that while Bacteria cannot see in the traditional sense of vision, it sees in “sound waves”. Therefore not only does have a heightened sense of hearing, what it can see is more along the lines of what is displayed on sound analyzing equipment such as a spectrogram. The teaser image in this case would actually be what Bacteria can “see” as such.
Wallpaper Distortion
A user on Kane’s Discord server believes that the wallpaper is actually stretched or “melted” rather than a glitch in the image and also posted some sketches to indicate this. They went on to mention that it could be draped over something ― with that something being obscured or hidden. This also lines up with the YouTube episodes Informational Video and Static Dead End which show the wallpaper being distorted/stretched.
A Furniture Store Closing Down
Those familiar with the viral Backrooms image from 2019 and the eventual discovery of the location of this image last year will know that the image was taken in what was at one stage a furniture store. Combining this with the tag-line of “Everything Must Go” which is synonymous with stores having one last sale to get rid of their stock when they close, we came across several users who speculated that the movie would have a furniture store included in it in some way. Some speculated that this could be where the main character works, is a business they own, or just a customer. But more commonly, those speculating along these lines thought that a furniture store may be where they no-clip to the Backrooms from. Or it could be relating to random furniture appearing in many of the rooms in Found Footage 3.
A City in Darkness
Some people have speculated that there is a city in the background of the image with the squares actually being the windows of high-rise buildings. The only city we know of in Kane’s Backrooms series is the “Red City” where everything is bathed in a red glow. Although as the image itself shows the blue tone, we came across one user who speculated that this could be a new “Blue City”.
