You’ve undoubtedly seen this image on social media by now ― a clapboard with BACKROOMS written on it, “no-clipping” into the carpet, iconic chevron wallpaper in the background ― posted with the date of 2026. This is A24’s official announcement for the Backrooms movie being released next year.
As someone who runs Backrooms related social media accounts across multiple platforms, along with being in the process of getting a website online, I like to engage with other fans. I regularly check for Backrooms posts on X/Twitter and am a regular over on Reddit in r/Backrooms and r/KanePixelsBackrooms. I’m also on Instagram and Facebook, but those platforms are a little more difficult to find the latest posts ― Instagram because it removed being able to view latest posts for a hashtag last year, and Facebook because a lot of people post things as Friends Only, and there isn’t a lot of active Backrooms activity on there (a lot of liminal photography though).
With the announcement of the Backrooms movie coming out in 2026, there was a lot of people talking online about it – a lot more than there usually are when it comes to The Backrooms. Here are some of the comments I observed while engaging with people and reading comments over the past couple of days.
Positives
- Lots of people really are looking forward to this movie. People are hyped and really excited, with some literally going crazy over it (yes, me being one of those people!).
- Many people expressed having a lot of faith in Kane Parsons, his vision for the Backrooms and that he is the right person for the job.
- Some expressed congratulations to Kane (mainly on Instagram as you can tag him on there). A lot of these comments came from people who had been following his work from the early days of his YouTube channel ― I even came across one person who had been following him since his Attack on Titan videos.
- There was a lot of respect for A24 and that they were the right production company to be doing a Backrooms movie and working with Kane.
- Many people expressed wanting to see this movie on opening day, or at the very least opening weekend. There were even a few people who said they would like to see it multiple times (this also was me!).
- Some people made comments about how groundbreaking the movie would be, that it would bring the Backrooms to new audiences, that it would become a horror classic, and even that “it could be this generation’s Blair Witch Project”.
- There were some people who didn’t know anything about The Backrooms or Kane Parsons. When they were provided a link and/or suggestion to watch his videos, they were very enthusiastic to check them out.
- People were happy to see that the iconic chevron wallpaper was included (something that had never been included in Kane’s video series).
- Surprisingly, there actually were hardly any negative comments.
- At one point on the day of the announcement, I noticed that Backrooms was trending in the entertainment news on X (kicking myself that I didn’t get a screenshot of it).
Theories
- While I didn’t come across much in the way of theories in relation to this image, the one theory I did see connected the numbers on the clapboard with Async. The numbers “11 22 31” can be translated to “KV31” ― with “K” being the 11th letter of the alphabet and “V” being the 22nd letter of the alphabet (KV31 is the name of the program associated with discovering and exploring this alternate reality in Kane’s Backrooms videos). “90” could reference the year the movie takes place, as there has been speculation that the movie is set in 1990 after a set leak image showed cars with number plates registered in that year.
Negatives / Common Misconceptions
- Major entertainment sites need a fact-checker! Several very well known commercial news sites were reporting that the movie had just started filming. This was very poor form from outlets which many people would think are credible sources of news.
- People who referred to The Backrooms as a “dead meme” or saying that no one was interested in The Backrooms anymore and therefore people wouldn’t be interested in the movie.
- People who thought that Kane created the idea/concept of The Backrooms and had no idea about the origins of The Backrooms on 4chan (one such person didn’t even believe people when they tried to let them know).
- People not realizing that this movie was even in production/coming out/etc (more so because it has been reported as being in development by both major and minor entertainment sites over the past year, as recent as June – but sometimes it’s easy to miss such information).
- People getting overly defensive in relation to their preferred form or lore and putting down the other Backrooms lores and/or people who created them (this was mainly Extended Universe vs Original Concept but did include some criticism of Kane’s version too). It’s perfectly understandable to have your own preference when it comes to The Backrooms and there may even be lores you don’t like at all. But respect goes a long way – especially when it comes to other fans and creators. The Backrooms inspires people in many different ways, and those ways might not be what you choose to enjoy.
- Not related to the movie, but people thinking that the Extended Universe originated from TikTok and not from the Wikis.
In Conclusion…
Overall, I felt that the reaction online was extremely positive. There appears to be a lot of buzz and excitement over this movie. Now we just have to wait for an actual release date as we could very likely be waiting 12 months from now!
