Kane recently popped into his Discord server to answer a few questions!
With the Backrooms movie being into post-production for a few weeks now, Kane Parsons has taken the time to informally answer some user questions over on his Discord server.
As the youngest director with A24 – 20 when he started filming the movie, Kane is of a different generation to many other feature film directors. Not only does he have his own Discord server where he will occasionally come online and interact with the members, but he also regularly posts stories on Instagram. It’s a refreshing change to see in an industry where often the creative minds behind the projects don’t interact with fans.
Wallpaper First Look
Although not directly “referenced” by Kane in his posts, he posted a few photos of his dog that he bought onto the set during the filming. But one of the photos gives us the very first look at the movie’s version of the iconic Backrooms chevron wallpaper design (at the time he posted this, the official A24 image with the wallpaper hadn’t been posted).
More subtle than the real Borden’s Home Wallcoverings wallpaper that was in the original Backrooms photo, the movie version retains an accurate design and the original cream color, but the accents are differing shades of cream. We think this might possibly be because the wallpapers used in Kane’s Backrooms always have been more subtle in nature — although patterned, the patterns were more subdued and not as easily noticed in the yellow walled section of ‘The Complex’
Current Post-Production Status
According to Kane, they are currently two weeks into the Directors Cut of the movie.
Discord Question: Kane, what stage of post-production are you currently in?
Kane: Week 2 of directors cut.
Kane: Doing some soundtrack tests this evening.
Also referred to as the fine cut, this generally is around half way through the post-production process. However the procedure does vary according to different information we looked at — so while it can be an indication, it is not a definite in the post-production timeline.
Discord Question: What are you doing right now? As in, what are you going to do once you get off discord?
Kane: Sitting in the editing room editing the film.
Discord Question: Is there someone with you in the editing room watching your every move to make sure you don’t try any funny business?
Kane: Yes, the editor. I am the supervisor in this scenario. Not actually at the controls myself.
Unlike when he produced his Backrooms YouTube videos, where he did everything himself, with the movie being backed by a studio, now he can rely on others to assist in the process. As a director who has been given creative control however, he would be there every step of the way — to make sure that the film retains the look and feel that he wants to achieve.
Discord Question: Do you choose the sounds yourself?
Kane: Oh yeah it’s a super thorough process. I’m as involved as I am with my personal YT work.
Practical Film-making vs CGI
One thing that is really exciting is how much practical effects will be in the movie as opposed to CGI. This was already hinted at in our previous article where a fan had got to visit the studio. While many of the bigger studios are opting for CGI these days, to see Kane say that he is going down the more practical path, is a breath of fresh air. It’s old-school film-making, and it certainly ties into the feeling that the YouTube series had (granted the “sets” on those were CGI, but Kane didn’t have the budget for a real set when he made those).
Discord Question: Kane, how much of the movie would you say is practical vs digital? Others have predicted a out 60/40.
Kane: I’d say like 90% practical.
Kane: But VFX go into every shot.
Kane: There are so many little things you’d never notice.
Discord Comment: Kane is singlehandedly bringing back old Hollywood charm.
Kane: Thank Chris Ferguson and the art department he bought on board for that one.
Kane: They’re phenomenal.
Future Projects
It looks like it still might be a bit of a wait though before we see anything actually from the film. But you never know when it comes to Kane, as he’s been known to reveal things from his projects in the past!
Discord Question: anything this month?
Kane: Very busy doing post on the film and prepping some other projects.
Kane: Unfortunately don’t have things ready to post at the moment.
However hearing that there are some new projects in the works, is also extremely exciting. Whether that be more of the YouTube Backrooms series or another original project, we will have to wait and see. Either way, it’s very exciting to see that even though he is busy with the film, he is still preparing for other projects.

Kane: Forced Jeremy Cox to listen to Gary Wilson on the drive to the set every day of production.
Those who follow Kane a bit more closely will recognize that Gary Wilson — an experimental artist who had his first album release in 1971 — is one of Kane’s favorite musical artists. He’s actually been tagging him on a couple of Instagram posts recently too.
