Those who follow this page may realise that I own (and will be launching this week) BackroomsMovie.com. I had always been surprised that A24 hadn‘t registered it when I purchased it last August. Traditionally, movie studios use a domains like this to promote their films.
That said, A24 tend to not often go down the .com route, instead many of their movies are promoted using the .movie domain, so it seemed like they would opt for backrooms.movie instead. However this domain was registered in 2021 and is actively used by the Backrooms Pantheon Wiki.
But looking at the start of today’s marketing, it seems there may actually be more than just a domain not being available that influenced their decision to go for a .mov domain instead with backrooms.mov
..mov is a domain extension often associated with online content such as video, streaming and the like. It’s is not often associated with feature films.
The unique thing about these domains is that they also can also be read as a file name as .mov is an extension for video files. Therefore in this case, could it be referencing a video called “backrooms.mov”?
Kane has several videos in his Backrooms series which have a title that is a filename, including two which use the .mov extension — faultline.mov and home_27647.mov. While it may not be likely that the movie has any reference to these particular videos, it does make us wonder if there is a “backrooms.mov” somewhere either referenced in the movie itself — maybe as a video that will be found and will have this as a file name. Or maybe it will take on something more in the marketing — an ARG for example.

And when we look at A24’s social media posts that were made today, the caption reads — “> tomorrow”. Many might have missed the “>” symbol on the caption. And while this could mean one of many things, as someone who is familiar with coding, I can’t help but think this this looks exactly like that — part of some sort of programming code, with languages associated with website coding — HTML, CSS, PHP and JavaScript all use this symbol in one way or another.
The other computer based interpretation could be that it resembles a terminal or command line. The > symbol is used in many terminal commands and the way it is written here, it does look like a command being inputted. This could tie into the movie being set in the 90s as use of such was more common in that time period. Or even something relating to Async.
Many fans have expressed that they hoped an ARG would be used to promote the movie, as it would suit the analog horror style of Kane’s Backrooms. Could there already be some clue out there waiting to be discovered?
Of course the choice of the .mov domain may be nothing more than to make it look like a video file because Kane‘s Backrooms started as a YouTube series. But seeing Kane is involved, it very likely might be something a lot more when it comes to backrooms.mov
