An article on news and finance website Bloomberg takes a look at the potential Backrooms has to take an original idea without much of a monster to the next level.
Close your eyes and imagine yourself in a dark theater. You’ve just bought tickets to a horror movie. Who or what is the first creepy thing that comes to mind? The thing that’ll give you a good scare. The thing compelling enough to make you leave your home because you had to see it on the big screen. Is it a bunch of empty rooms and never-ending hallways — liminal spaces, the eerie in-between places that feel both familiar and unsettling?
While most of the article takes a look at the risks involved in making a movie like Backrooms, there are some good points raised about what it is about this kind of horror – places that make us feel uncomfortable – that resonates with some people. But on the flip side, many studios won’t take a risk on such because some audiences may be turned off by something that doesn’t follow the usual horror formula.
