Backrooms – Everything Must Go

What is Everything Must Go?

Everything Must Go is an additional 16 minutes of footage relating to the Backrooms movie. In the cinemas it was shown after the credits, however it also can be viewed as a standalone Backrooms episode. It is a prequel to the movie in found-footage format, following the events of Naren Warne and his team.

Everything Must Go was animated in Blender by Kane Parsons, so is similar to the videos from his YouTube series. Fans of his series will recognize some similarities with the episodes Pitfalls and Lighting and Tile Survey in particular. It was completed just after the release of the movie, taking just under two weeks to complete.

Release

Everything must go was initially a theater exclusive, released on July 3rd in North America and the UK, and July 2nd in Australia and New Zealand. Most screenings of Backrooms from this date would show this version instead of the regular version. Unfortunately however, not all countries would end up showing this additional feature (a list of known release dates for the feature can be found here).

On July 12th it was hinted at by Kane that the Everything Must Go feature would be released on his YouTube Channel sometime that week. However this ended up being delayed, most likely because some additional countries were yet to premiere the episode. Kane joked in his Discord server that it was being “held back by the older gentleman”. This was a throwback to a false rumor that was circulating before the movie’s release that the real director was an older gentleman and Kane was just the face to appeal to the younger audience.

The episode was finally uploaded to the Kane Pixels YouTube channel on August 17th, gaining 1 million views in 14 hours and 2 million views in under 2 days.

It was also announced that the feature will be included as a special feature on A24’s Special Edition of the Blu-ray and 4K UHD.

What Everything Must Go is Not

Everything Must Go is not a Directors Cut, nor does it add any additional footage to the main movie. When it was shown in the cinemas, the movie itself was shown in the same way as it had been with the original release. As Everything Must Go was shown after the credits, it did not effect the movie itself.

Trivia

  • Dr. Ronald McCarthy was part of the expedition in the episode Informational Video in the Backrooms web-series.
  • Although we only see Pirate Clark for a few seconds, the model appears to be based on the original design rather than the final version that we see in the movie.
