Being in Australia, I’ve been lucky enough to get to see Backrooms: Everything Must Go before most of the world as it released on July 2nd here.
Tonight’s screening of Backrooms was the 20th time I’ve seen the movie in the theaters, but it was the first time since before my first screening that I could feel the tingle of excitement building. To see what would be new Backrooms content so soon after the movie, was something I didn’t think we’d get for quite a while.
Kane had already indicated that it would be something fans who wanted to see more of the YouTube series would be into. And A24’s first promo centred around Async.
And Kane didn’t disappoint.
The episode is very much in the style of the previous Async orientated episodes – that being recorded footage centering around researching The Complex. There is also a few parts where
I felt this episode bought together different aspects of these types of episodes. There’s really a bit of something for everyone – exploration, scientific analysis, a bit of tension and more (the more goes into spoiler territory so I’ll leave it at that).
We see some more new Backrooms areas which I was very excited about as one of my favourite things is seeing new areas. We also see some areas that people will recognise from the movie. And we also see the Backrooms being explored in a way that we haven’t really seen before.
Kane posted in his Discord server that the feature was all done in Blender and was done in a couple of weeks after the movie was released. He was doing finishing touches to it all only a few days ago!
I definitely felt that it was done “for the fans”, perhaps as a thank you to everyone for coming out and supporting the movie. And while non-fans would still be able to enjoy it, it doesn’t really go into any details about who Async are and what they are doing. And it does have a few of the usual unanswered questions that the Backrooms series is known for.
My only real criticism was in some parts it was difficult to understand what was being said due to the voices being somewhat muffled to keep the realism of the characters being in hazmat suits. This seemed more of an issue at the beginning – whether it was because I got used to it or whether it did get less muffled, I’ll have to wait until I watch it again.
Although I won’t be waiting long as I plan to go and see it again tomorrow.
Overall, I really loved this extra feature. If you’re a fan and you’re able to, definitely go and see this if you can!
